Magnolia Manor Series

Excerpt from “Bless Your Heart”

“You can’t baptize that baby in winter,” Maude shook her head. “She’ll freeze slam to death.”

“It’s not technically winter,” Opal countered. She launched into an explanation of how the seasons were originally named and which months of the year fell into which season according to the calendar.

“I don’t care what season April is in,” Maude shrugged. “It’s colder than a frosted frog out here.”

“What exactly does that even mean?” Ruby giggled from the pew ahead of her. She had opened her Bible to a random passage and had been trying to read to pass the time, but she kept getting distracted.

“Well, I was going to say it’s colder than a witch’s tit, but I knew you’d get all up in arms about that one,” Maude smirked.

“Maude! Shh,” Ruby hissed. She had gone beet red and sank down in the pew. Maude never failed to embarrass her when people were around. The small church was filled with her neighbors and fellow Rhinestonians that were waiting for Brother George Barton to walk up to the pulpit. He had gotten caught at the back of the aisle by the piano player, Tammy, who was complaining about the songs the choir director had chosen for the week. Tammy preferred a more consistent song list that didn’t vary from week to week, but Brother Barton had left the song list up to the choir director, Thurmond Decater, much to Tammy’s fury…

Opening Night for “Color Me Crazy”

April 21st, 2023…

It’s opening night! I can’t help but feel like we just began rehearsals. The cast for this show is something special. They will never know what this show means to me.

This play was adapted from a novel that was written during the Covid lockdown. The goal of writing the Magnolia Manor series was to make people laugh and hopefully bring a sense of peace to the reader’s life during a time of fear and angst. As many of you know, theaters shut down: High school theatres, community theatres, and even Broadway went dark for more than a year. Not only did the arts industry suffer from the pandemic, but the actors were deeply impacted, some losing not only their livelihood but their passion as well. I never imagined that this book series would become a play on the very stage I love. It feels incredible to open the play here at Warner Robins Little Theatre with all of you.

This amazing group of actors took a chance on an unknown play and have made my dream come true. Seeing these characters that I have loved for so long being brought to life in front of me every night has been nothing short of magic. You will recognize quite a few faces on the stage, but there are also a few who are brand new to our theatre family. Tonight will be their very first opening night ever. There is something so special about opening night.

I am so thankful that our community supports live theatre. Nobody does live theatre to get rich. We do live theatre because we love storytelling and creating works of art on stage for you. It’s all about the human connection. I just want to close this letter with a big thank you. Thank you to my cast and crew. None of this would be possible without each and every one of you. Thank you all for supporting WRLT and all of your local community and school theatres.
